When One Becomes Two

Capture

I’m expecting my second child.

The birth is only a few weeks away.

I couldn’t be happier.

My first child is counting down the days as well, with a mixture of excitement tinged with resignation knowing they will no longer be the sole focus of my attention.

And before this sleight-of-hand analogy gets carried any further let me make it clear -when I say second child I’m naturally meaning second BLOG.

Because really the pet project I’ve tendered to these past two years, known affectionately as SCENIC WRITER’S SHACK, has in many ways seemed like my own offspring. It talks like me, thinks like me and courtesy of gallery pictures, looks like me. By jove it is me! – just in another form.

Only now it’ll have a little brother. Or is that little sister? Better make that ‘relation’. Here’s what’s happening…

A secret I’ve rarely shared is that from childhood I have been a life long dedicated fan of the 1960’s television series LOST IN SPACE. I lived, ate and breathed every frame of every episode of this space-age wonder of the small screen from roughly the age of eight. I might have had Charlie’s Angels’ posters on my wall growing up but my true heart belonged to the Robinson family, eeeeeevil Dr Smith and of course the robot!

I have the box set. I have the robot figurine. I have the. What I don’t have is an outlet to express my admiration and mad devotion to this old-time show. Enter inspiration in the form of American wonder blogger Lady Emily Rose. She operates a spectacularly good site called KNIGHT OF ANGELS. (VIEW IT HERE) It boasts a literal treasure trove of fandom-based literary style writings on books, films, television and music. She holds a particular fondness for another 1960’s sci-fi tv series you may have heard of – STAR TREK. This year Emily began her great re-watch of all 79 episodes and is chronicling her thoughts as she goes – episode by episode. (READ THEM HERE)

The standard of commentary on KNIGHT OF ANGELS is first-rate and I wondered if I could aspire to something in a similar vein. STAR TREK (originally aired 1966 -1969) and LOST IN SPACE (originally aired 1965 -1968) were at one time direct rivals aired on competing US tv networks. I thought I owed it to my old flame then to raise the flag in its name and pay homage.

With the launch set to take place early next month everything is being carefully prepared and assembled. What’s not in place is a name. The new blog is currently going by the working title of LOST IN SPACE ULTIMATE. Since that name could possibly be construed as having a slightly boastful ring to it, I think I can do better.

This is where I need your help!

Below you’ll find a list of possible names under consideration for my new venture. I would  love ♥ love ♥ love if you’d deem to drop into the comments box below what your pick or picks of these might be. Here they are, in no particular order –

  1. First and foremost… congrats on the upcoming second child! The world is in better hands for knowing that you’re going to grow another sci-fi fan. 🙂

Thank you for the shout-out on the Trek watch. Always appreciated.

Maybe it’s the nostalgia side of it, but I like LOST IN SPACE REWIND. Regardless of what you name it, I’m looking forward to it!

  2. I like several, but LOST IN SPACE RISING is my fav 🙂
(LOST IN SPACE AWAKENING and … REWIND seem to me very nice names as well, if some of them become the final winner).
As for the show itself, I keep a very blurred memory of having seen a few episodes sometime in the spanish TV, ages ago, and that my Dad watched them and, so I think, liked them much.
((Hugs, Glen. And best success with the new blog))

  3. I didn’t know 🙂
I feel like discovering this old show (someone made a quite modern movie based on it, which I liked !), so I will gladly follow your posts and watch any videos you may include or link to)
    (((Hugs)))!!

    • Thankyou so much Lixie.

I know that THE MASK OF ZORRO starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones was released in 1998. Anrhony Hopkins played the ‘old’ Zorro in this film as well, rounding out a properly stellar cast. The film was a commercial and critical hit. To market the film, the production company TriStar (owned by Sony) purchased a 30-second advertising spot at Super Bowl XXXII for $1.3 million.

A sequel was released in 2005 called THE LEGEND OF ZORRO in which Banderas and Zeta-Jones reprised their roles. This film however was less successful. THE MASK OF ZORRO and its sequel THE LEGEND OF ZORRO both incorporate certain historical events and people into their narratives. As an example, Antonio Banderas’ character, Alejandro Murrieta, is a fictional brother of Joaquin Murrieta, a real-life Mexican outlaw who was killed by California State Rangers in 1853.

  4. Ha ha ha!!! You are encyclopaedic about movies, boy!!
I’m just sorry to notice I expressed myself unclearly… I was not talking about The Zorro below the first line, but of Lost in Space, since I’m sure I watched a nice film with this title.
But, please, take a long breath and have a well-deserved break before losing more time with my clumsy comments and blatant ignorance with respect to your most beloved series. ((KISSES !!!!))

  5. So if it is a boy are you going to share your robot. My husband still has his cars up high away from

Erin who is now 14. He still doesn’t like to share!

Looking forward to your exciting news. Best wishes to you both.

  6. LOST IN SPACE REWIND was actually going to be the working title for the blog while its still under construction before I finally decided to go with with the bulging biceps tone of LOST IN SPACE ULTIMATE.

    Thankyou for voting.
(And may I add, rest asured under the circumstance I take no exception whatsoever to you referring to my second born as an ‘it’.)

  7. Lol. That was a good one. You totally got me on the kid front!
It is terrible to say I’m glad your kid turned into a Lost In Space retrospective? ‘Cause although a child would bring you and yours untold joy and happiness, he or she wouldn’t bring ME untold joy and happiness. But a Lost in Space retrospective WOULD.

Still remember my brother receiving the Jupiter II for Christmas long ago and my fascination with it. I like Lost in Space Fireside for its *official* sound, but also like Lost in Space Awakenings for its *mystery.* But I think I like Lost in Space Rising over all of them.

    Can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait !!!

    • Anon, you really know the way to a man’s heart.
      Your choices are inspired.
      A congratulations card?
I may even stage a full on bib-smacking baby shower come launch time!
Thankyou again, and the clever not to mention enigmatic and downright ‘Dan Brownish’ quality of LOST IN SPACE FOUND! (complete with the extra nuance enhancing exclamation mark) cannot be overstated.

  9. My heart is swelling Stacey with this stupendously amazing feedback.
I’m glad someone has mentioned LOST IN SPACE FIRESIDE ’cause I also like the crafted-mahogany-and-burgundy-leather-reading-chair feel this one gives off.

What’s that old expression about enthusiasm worth bottling?
Thankyou for yours and after reading your email I now feel unstoppable.
Hang on… LOST IN SPACE UNSTOPPABLE.
I may just be onto something.
    On second thoughts – nah!
    Better keep thinking.

CONGRATULATIONS daddy-to-be second time around! You have kept that a secret hey! Wonderful news Glen! Are you taking some time off for the birth and the early days home?

  11. FlIPSIDE it is Robyn!
As much as I’m a fan of skim reading, may I heartily recommend you venture a bold and determined re-read of that blog post. There is a somewhat different meaning on offer there waiting to greet you with warm, welcoming arms.

Happy re-reading Robyn, drop me a line when you’ve gone over it again and don’t you dare get me one of those pink-tinged ‘New Born Baby’ well-wishing cards.
